Intestinal metaplasia seen in autoimmune gastritis

Intestinal metaplasia seen in autoimmune gastritis can undergo dysplasia and progress to adenocarcinoma.

The incidence of adenocarcinoma developing is increased, at 1 %-3%. Both thyroiditis and hypothyroidism are associated. Myasthenia gravis and other autoimmune disorders ( which tend to run together) including Sjogren disease are also associated, as are diabetes mellitus and adrenal insufficiency.

Autoimmune gastritis can also be associated with dermatitis herpetiformis, however the gastritis is NOT reversed with gluten restriction.
