New Position Statement on Screening Mammography by American College of Breast Surgeons

  1. Women more than 25 years of age should undergo formal risk assessment for breast cancer (this can be done using various scores available like GAIL, BRCApro)

  2. Women with an average risk of breast cancer should initiate YEARLY screening from 40 years of age. (In between we were following 45 years but after this statement, 40 would be better)

  3. Women with a higher than average risk of breast cancer should undergo yearly screening mammography and be offered yearly supplemental imaging; this screening at the risk based age. (see table for details)

  4. Screening mammography should cease when life expectancy is less than 10 years.
