What is PTU?
Propylthiouracil (PTU) is a drug used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism.
There is one more dimension to the PTU.
PTU, along with another compound - phenyl thiocarbamide (PTC), also known as phenylthiourea (PTU) - can be used as a “genetic marker”.
The PTC & PTU either taste very bitter or are virtually tasteless, depending on the genetic makeup of the taster.
The PTC taste test has been used as an example of Mendelian polymorphism in human populations.
