Scalded skin syndrome

SCALDED SKIN SYNDROME.

Causative organism, (staphylococcus aureus)
GM positive cocci, catalase positive, coagulase positive, ferments Manitole salt agar.

Clinical presentation
Newborn baby 3-7 days from delivery, presents with fever and diffuse erythema starting at the mouth, sloughed skin
Characteristic sign (NIKOLSSKY’S SIGN)
skin slips off with gentle tug.

Toxin mediated,
(EXOFOLIATIVE TOXIN) which also causes staph impetigo.

NB,
The lesions leave no trace for scars as the toxin destroys the attachment of keratinocytes at the startum granulosum “intra epidermis”
So the dermis is intact.
