Types of Tracheostomy
- High tracheostomy
Done through the 1st tracheal ring
An opening is made above the isthmus of the
thyroid gland
Done in case of malignancy of the larynx
Increased risk of perichondritis and subglottic
stenosis - Mid tracheostomy
Done through the 2nd-3rd rings
Most commonly done tracheostomy
Isthmus has to be retracted or divided - Low tracheostomy
Done through the 4th-5th tracheal ring
Done below the isthmus
Done when the airway is blocked at an upper
airway level
Risk of injuring the great vessels of the neck
