A fibroadenoma is a benign (non-cancerous) mass made up of fibroglandular breast tissue and stromal (connective) tissue. Fibroadenomas may be solitary or multiple.

Who is at risk of developing fibroadenomas?

A fibroadenoma is the most common solid breast mass in a woman under the age of 30, but can be seen in older women as well. African-American females tend to develop fibroadenomas more often and at an earlier age than Caucasian women.

What causes fibroadenomas?

The cause of fibroadenomas is unknown. Since they are seen in mostly younger women, estrogen may play a part in their development.
